Edward Anders’s book Jews in Liepaja, Latvia, 1941-45, in the article “The Killing in the Cities – Liepaja” by Andrew Ezergailis, provides some information about the murder of the Jewish population of Vainode:
“Vainode was a town of 1,417 inhabitants sixty kilometers southeast of Liepaja, where 125 Jews had lived in 1935. Galins led an SD group of twenty-five men to Vainode. Eight Germans accompanied them but they traveled separately in two passenger cars. Schutzmannschaft men from Vainode had brought the victims to the killing site outside the town, where they were quartered in an uninhabited military building. When the killing began the victims were brought out in groups of ten. About fifty meters from the building there was a barracks and behind it some woods. Between the woods and the barracks there was a ditch. Knowing that they would be killed, the Jews had thrown away their valuables. Kugler was angry at the local policemen for permitting the Jews to do that. The killing was finished at 5:00 in the evening, when the Liepaja group went to Vainode for a feast” (11). The massacre in Vainode took place November 1, 1941.
